businesses are getting prepared. what the giants-cardinals matchup will mean to the local economy. the shuttle is closer to home. but with complications. why there won't be an on-time arrival for this final mission. and a bay area college student makes a half-court shot. good evening. i'm ann notarangelo. various sports fans in heaven tonight. the 49ers are red hot and the giants are on the eve of another national championship series. a look at how baseball is good for business. >> reporter: red, white and blue, championship game, going on at at&t park, while the cardinals and giants held separate practice sessions on the field. business was great in the giants dugouts sports store.

kiply just had to have another giants shirts. >> i bought another shirt, because they won. it's good for pedro's and pete's. along the corridor and probably public house, because it gets really crowded when the giants are playing and people can't afford tickets. >> reporter: good too for the popular paragon bar. >> it was chaos in 2010. most of the time. but it was fun, you know. lots of people excited and everyone piling out on the streets. >> reporter: now paragon is gearing up for a repeat and trying to make room for as many as they can fit in. >> people have been calling all day. that's what we're doing a little differently this time. we're doing all walk-in basis, so first come, first served for the tables. we've opened up two additional rooms. we have a room in the back. >> reporter: businesses are gearing up, in just the past couple of days.

>> i've seen a lot of people go up and down second street, which is where i work, and they are out there, behind the giants. >> and you're buying giants' gear? >> yes, i am. >> reporter: he says it feels good all around town, having another giants championship play-off about to get underway. >> it's going great things for san francisco. for these guys to do what they did in cincinnati and bring it home, they have hopefully a good seven games ahead of them. hopefully not seven. >> reporter: seven games if the giants win would be a torturous thriller but good for business. reporting live in san francisco, cbs 5. and here's a look at the giants schedule against the cardinals. in the best of seven series. the giants have home field advantage. the first game is tomorrow at at&t park at 5:00. game 2 also at 5:00 on monday. then it's off to st. louis for three games. then, if needed, back to san francisco for the last two. kim will have more on

tomorrow's game in a few minutes. tomorrow, the shuttle endeavour's journey has slowed from a crawl to a dead stop. it's eight hours behind schedule and not expected to arrive at the california science center until tomorrow. crews are having trouble with the trailer carrying endeavour. and the large crowds have made logistics more complicated. thousands of have waited hours. >> reporter: people in los angeles can be a bit blase about seeing stars. yet, seeing a starship is a show even hollywood cannot rival. >> it's awesome. so big too. i can't believe it's going down the street. >> reporter: you don't normally see a space shutting outside a donut shop. crowds could read the numbers on the tiles. >> i want to see it, because i never saw it. and i wanted to be an

astronaut. >> reporter: moving a 78-ton spacecraft in the second- largest city in the country is an endeavor in itself. they walk alongside the giant rig, guiding it with a wireless joystick. the driver says the crowd has been routeing for him. >> there's some real enthusiasm, when we worked our way through a real tight spot. >> reporter: on some neighborhood streets, the shuttle's 78-foot wing span didn't have room to spare. >> we put taller power polls in and we raised the wire to a higher clearance, that way we can get the power on for the consumers in this area. >> reporter: the streets also had to be reinforced with 2700

metal plates. this whole thing ways 375,000 pounds. >> this is the only time it's going to happen. it's the last shuttle, never going to do this again. none of them are ever going to do it again. >> reporter: endeavour was built in california and arrived back home in style three weeks ago on the back of a 747. the shuttle will dock here tonight at the california science center, the end of its final mission. ben tracy, cbs news, los angeles. tonight the pentagon says it's investigating a collision between a navy submarine and a cruiser. it happened at an undisclosed location. no one was hurt. the sub involved was a uss ship. the extent of the damage, is quote, being evaluated. in campaign 2012, both presidential candidates are back in the battleground states and for good reason. new poll numbers show mitt romney continuing to close the

also layoffs by the thousands. the unemployment rate in the silicon valley is 8.5%, higher than the national average. >> life is not as great in silicon valley as we'd like to think. >> reporter: tom, a logistics manager, has been downsized four times. >> we are surrounded by overachievers and innovators and people doing great, great work. oftentimes it is tough to have to explain that you're in a position where you're still searching. >> reporter: he's been out of work for ten months. an eternity in silicon valley. >> the longer you're unemployed, the less desirable you become. and things are changing so quickly, if you haven't been doing it for six months or more, you're already obsolete. >> reporter: in job interviews, his 25 years of experience are often brushed off. >> each time you're overqualified for this particular role we're trying to fill. >> no employer is ever going to
